Seibert

Kit Carson County

1937

WPA
Architectural Description:
This adobe and concrete community building has a barrel roof that flattens out at the edges. Large cement pilasters wrap the building and form a crenellated parapet. In between the pilasters are windows, although they have been filled in on both the east and west sides. There is decorative horizontal fluting above the remaining windows. Brick has been added to the bottom 2/3rds of the west elevation.
Historical Background:
The community building was a WPA project. The initial federal grant was for $18,610, with a mere $650 local contribution by the Town of Seibert. An additional federal grant of $8,200 was needed to finish the project. The WPA application states that the purpose of the building was “to provide suitable quarters for the transaction of official business and to provide facilities for recreational, educational and cultural activities.” The building had still not been completed when the VFW leased the building in 1947. The building was used for years for roller skating and dances as well as sporting events. Beginning in the 1950s and lasting for about twenty-five years, it also accommodated a Civil Defense emergency hospital. Currently, town offices are located in the building, and it is still used for community events.
