Location:    various locations
County:    Prowers County
Date Constructed:    1936
Built by:    WPA

Architectural Description:
County Road R in Prowers County has five stone culverts most likely dating to the New Deal era. They are all similar in appearance with only minor differences. Each has a 4’ span with a semi-circular arch and is constructed of quarry-faced ashlar sandstone. One has a one-course parapet, three have a two-course parapet, and one has a three-course parapet. One of the two-course parapet culverts features masonry that is more “finished” than all of the others and its courses are more regular.

Historical Background:
There are no exact records for the five stone culverts located on County Road R. Documentation on road projects for Prowers County does not geographically identify these culverts. However, because the culverts resemble WPA bridges constructed in the mid 1930s, they are all assumed to have been built during the same time period.
