Architectural Description:
The main part of the two-story high gymnasium/auditorium is constructed of dressed-faced coursed ashlar limestone and has a barrel roof. The front entrance is found in a simple one-story bay. Engaged pilasters and recessed courses wrap three-quarters of the way around the building. There is a stepped parapet that rises to the center located on the façade. Along both sides, or the north and south elevations, there are five sets of windows aligned at the second-story level. At the back of the building, there is a two-story brick section with a gable roof.

Historical Background:
The gymnasium was built as a WPA project. Several federal grants were needed to complete the building totaling $28,314. The Prowers County School District No. 41 provided the local contribution of $10,804. The demolition of and salvaging materials from the old school building was also part of the project. The justification statement on the application reads, “The school district is much in need of such a structure as proposed which will serve jointly as a gymnasium and assembly hall for community gatherings. The building to be demolished is entirely inadequate but contains considerable material which can be advantageously utilized in a new structure. The district is not in financial condition to build without assistance.” The gymnasium has been used over the decades not only for the school but also for the community. It has been used for sporting events, voting, funeral services, inoculations, receptions, as well as many other events. The town owns the building today and has worked to raise money for its restoration. The gymnasium was added to the state register in 1996.
