Historical Background:
Historical Background: This city hall was a WPA project. The final cost of the building was over $17,800. It was constructed to house “various city offices and to provide space for a library and two jail cells.” The structure was built out of the same Niobrara chalk stone that was used to construct the Holly Gymnasium. Purportedly, the stone could be cut with hand saws but hardened over time as it was exposed. The project employed eighty men. Upon completion, the fire and police departments moved into the building. The library was also located in the structure and was often used for community events. Over the decades, the different departments vacated the building until it was empty in 2000. In 2003, the city hall was added not only to the state register but also the National Register. Currently, there are plans to rehab the building.
